In December of 2022 BEATS rolled out a bespoke training programme for Lime Pictures. To raise awareness and understanding centred around the representation of BESEAS and BESEA narratives on UK TV screens.
Since 2021 BEATS has been working tirelessly behind the scenes with Lime; facilitating introductions to directors, writers and DOPs. Lime had identified and recognised the lack of representation both on and off screen of BESEAS and they wanted to do something about this.
Lime reached out to BEATS asking if we would be able to offer them some training surrounding BESEA engagement and representation. BEATS created, designed and rolled out a bespoke, intensive training programme. Which interrogated and investigated the intricacies and nuances of writing and working with BESEA creatives. From historical racism and erasure to contemporary white-washing, stereotypes and persistent racist tropes - exploring the roots and asking why? Looking at the practical and pragmatic actions that can be taken to counter-act centuries of racism, prejudice and bias.
It is an ongoing process which continues and has helped develop an opportunity for new directors via Mingyu Lin (TV Director on Hollyoaks and also Founding member of BEATS) offering the chance to new directors to shadow Mingyu whilst she directs an episode of the TV show.
